Abstract
To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of methylcobalamin for the diabetic peripheral neuropathy, w; followed the 14 patients with-diabetic peripheral neuropathy up during the administration of methylcobal
1.5 mg orally per day for 4 weeks with several clinical parameters and electrophysiological test. The blo + + glucose levels were adequately controlled during admission in all patients.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. After administration of methylcobalamin, the recovery rates of the pain, paresthesia and numbnes
of the lower extremities were 40%, 37.5% and 57.1%, respectively.
2. At the end of the study, the recovery rates of the patellar reflex and ankle jerk were 33.3% and 16.6%
respectively.
3. With electromyographic study performed on peroneal and tibial motor nerves, the recovery rates o the conduction velocity were 57.1% and 80%, respectively. The recovery rates of delayed distal laten cy and decreased amplitude of sural sensory nerves were 31.5% and 58.3%, respectively. The recove rates of delayed distal latency and decreased amplitude of superficial peroenal sensory nerves wer 58.3% and -80%, respectively.
4. There was no significant side effect of the drug ,in all patients during the study.
This study suggests that the short-term treatment of methylocbabamin is effective and safe to the patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy under the adquate control of blood glucose.
